Inter Miami coach Martino criticizes referee following draw with NYCFC.

Inter Miami head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino expressed frustration after the 1-1 draw against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium, stating that the match "lacked a good referee."

Throughout the heated contest, Inter Miami players received five of the nine yellow cards, and an assistant coach was shown a red card and sent off in the second half. As a result, Noah Allen and Federico Redondo will miss the upcoming match against Charlotte FC on September 28 due to yellow card accumulation.

"The team didn’t lack anything, but the match lacked a good referee," Martino remarked in the post-game press conference. He was particularly upset with referee Jon Freemon for not calling a foul when Inter Miami defender Yannick Bright went down in the box, leading to NYCFC midfielder James Sands scoring the late equalizer.

"We played well and should have won," he stated. "If the referee had called the foul against Yannick Bright, we would have secured a 1-0 victory."

Inter Miami (19-4-7) didn’t score until the 75th minute, when Leo Campana, who came on as a substitute, finished a play initiated by Lionel Messi. Messi drove forward and found Jordi Alba on his left, who then set up Campana for an easy tap-in.

New York (11-11-8) equalized in the fifth minute of stoppage time with a corner kick. Santiago Rodríguez delivered a perfect ball into the box, where James Sands was unmarked at the 6-yard line and headed it just inside the near post.

The match drew an impressive crowd of 44,738 at Yankee Stadium, the second-highest attendance in NYCFC history. The teams also played to a 1-1 draw in Miami on March 30.

Despite the back-to-back draws against Atlanta United and NYCFC, Inter Miami remains atop the Eastern Conference and Supporters' Shield standings with 64 points from 30 matches.

To clinch the Supporters' Shield, the Herons need to earn eight points from their final four matches, and they require ten points to break the MLS record for most points in a single season, currently held by the New England Revolution with 73 points in 2021.

Inter Miami will be back in action next Saturday, hosting Charlotte FC at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
